Deadly Storms Batter Houston, Killing 4
Hurricane-Force Winds Leave Hundreds of Thousands Without Power
Mayor: "Strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding caused significant damage."
A powerful storm system swept through the Houston area on Thursday evening, killing at least four people and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. The storms brought hurricane-force winds, heavy rain, and flooding to the region, causing widespread damage.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the storms were "some of the strongest we've seen in years." He urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of up to 80 mph in the Houston area. The storms also produced heavy rain, with some areas receiving more than 6 inches of rain in a short period of time. The rain caused flooding in several areas, including downtown Houston.
The storms left more than 500,000 homes and businesses without power. Utility crews are working to restore power, but it could take several days for everyone to have their power back.
The storms also caused damage to buildings and infrastructure. The Houston Independent School District canceled classes on Friday due to the damage.
The storms are the latest in a series of severe weather events that have hit the United States in recent weeks. Earlier this month, tornadoes killed dozens of people in the South and Midwest.
